After two intensive days, the Smart Systems Integration 2019 in Barcelona, Spain, from 10 - 11 April 2019, looks back on an abundance of relevant lectures and international exhibitors on innovative smart systems and their applications.

Conference – knowledge exchange on the pulse of time

The 242 participants of the Smart Systems Integration were able to further their knowledge in a total of five keynote lectures, 52 specialist lectures, two special sessions from the European Technology Platform on Smart Systems Integration (EPoSS) and 25 poster presentations. A special highlight was the panel discussion on the topic "Future aspects of smart integrated systems" on Thursday, 11 April 2019.

The conference once again dealt with the application areas of smart systems as well as smart systems themselves, starting with the design via new components for sensor technology, data processing, control, networking and smart powering up to the heterogeneous integration of the different components, embedded software and manufacturing of the systems.

Renowned speakers provided exclusive insights into the multifaceted spectrum of topics: Professor Wilfried Mokwa from the RWTH Aachen University, for example, dealt with the topic "Artificial Vision - Retinal Implants to Restore Vision in Blind People" in his keynote lecture and described highly topical application possibilities of smart systems in medicine. In addition, various European projects presented their success stories for the first time in two special sessions. The presentations ranged from the topic of gas sensors with the title "Smart multisensor embedded and secure system for soil nutrient and gaseous emission monitoring" to cameras in autonomous vehicles with the lecture on "Design an Ultra-Low Power Event-Based Camera for Autonomous Vehicles". In addition, the status of different pilot production systems was showcased.

All facets of smart systems integration covered

The functionalities of an increasing amount of objects are supplemented by smart, digital components such as those found in smartphones, smart watches, wearables or smart cars. By bringing such components, technologies or systems to market and integrating them into their products, companies are opening up new opportunities and competitive advantages for them as a result of these digital changes. "Currently, there are many projects that are developing intelligent multimodal sensors for health applications, emission monitoring, industrial process monitoring, food and agricultural production processes. It is very important for us to cover these developments via the extensive conference program, to integrate software aspects and therefore serve a wide variety of industries," explains Committee Chairman Professor Thomas Otto from Fraunhofer ENAS.

Unique business and networking platform

In total, more than 20 exhibitors from industry and science and from various countries presented the latest trends, developments and innovations on the subject of Smart Systems Integration and look back on a successful event that provided visitors with an overview of the industry and served as an information and communication platform.

"The Smart Systems Integration is a place to meet the right persons and hold fruitful discussions on a deep technical level," summarises the exhibitor Hans Grönqvist, Teknologie Doktor Forskare, RISE Research Institutes of Sweden.

Further events offered additional training options

Following the Pre-Conference Field Trip, which this year led to the R&D International Centre of HP Inc., the EPoSS Working Group Meetings were held on the topics of "Transport", "Factory Automation & Robotics", "Healthy Living", "Applied MNBS", "Energy", "Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources", and "Key Technologies".

The Smart Systems Hub - Enabling IoT, based in Dresden, Germany, hosted workshops on the comprehensive integration of hardware, software and connectivity (5G) as the foundation of our digital future.

Smart Systems Integration 2020 in France

The Smart Systems Integration next year will take place in Grenoble, France, from 1 - 2 April 2020. The Smart Systems Integration is organized by Mesago Messe Frankfurt GmbH together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems ENAS in Chemnitz, the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM in Berlin and EPoSS, the European Platform for Smart Systems Integration.
