The TME offer now includes Schottky diodes enclosed in a small SMB package designed for surface mounting (SMT). These components boast a maximum forward current of up to 1A and are manufactured by specialist brand SMC Diodes.

Schottky diodes are an invention of German physicist Walter H. Schottky, who was the first person to develop a diode based on a metal-semiconductor junction. This solution has proved to have a number of noteworthy advantages. The most important of these is the low forward voltage – in the case of the products presented here, it reaches a maximum of 350mV (at 1A, depending on the model). This is half the value of the standard P-N junction diodes. In addition, the diode’s low junction capacitance (less than 390pF) translates into its fast switching time and allows it to operate with higher frequency signals than in the case of solutions based solely on silicon.

Diodes of this kind are applied in various types of power supply units, inverters and voltage converters as reverse polarity protection, to absorb surges at contacts or inductances, and to rectify high-frequency signals (more info).
